international airports. Well, talking about the international
airports in Maldives, Malé International Airport that lies on
the Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll near Male
is the main international airport. It has been playing a significant
role in the tourism in Maldives. Though, the Gan airport has been
upgraded to meet international standards, however, international
flight operations have not yet started taking place.
The Male international airport was officially inaugurated by
Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, the then president on November 11, 1981. The
charge for administering and managing it financially is done by a
private corporate entity known as Maldives Airports Company Limited.
The board of directors appointed by the president govern it. The
airport is well equipped and consists of a bank, pharmacy, duty free
shops, bureau de change, restaurant and post office. It also makes
provision for first aid facilities. The best part is that this
airport also provides seaplane transfer service to islands.
